When you are a kid, people often ask you what you want to be when you grow up. What they should be asking you is “who do you want to be when you grow up.” As you get older, you begin to realize that many people value their lives based on their career and the work that they do. This is a reductive way to look at life. We are more than just a collection of work that we’ve created. The work that we do is just a part of the experiences that make us complete human beings.
If you are unhappy at work, you need to think about why you are unhappy. There’s a good chance that it’s more than just not being paid enough or having a boss who you don’t like. If you are simply taking a job for a paycheck, you’ll never experience true happiness. You’ll always be thinking about how unfulfilling your career is or how you would like to be doing something else. These are negative thoughts that will actually keep you from being able to make a change in your career.
The Universe gives us powerful clues about what we should be doing with our lives — we just need to be open to receiving these clues. If you are unhappy with your job, take the time to determine the types of things that you do which give you the most happiness. Chances are that there are things you love doing — you just don’t get paid for them. Why not? You might need to start at the bottom rung or go back to school, but this is just temporary. If you are meant to do something else in your life, the Universe will let you know and you need to listen.
